Soccer in Puerto Rico

Football in Puerto Rico - culture, history, and development.

Puerto Rico’s soccer system is hybrid: semi-professional structures, strong amateur leagues, and periodic professional eras. Football is growing, but still developing its long-term league stability.

    League Structure

The core of the system is the Liga Puerto Rico, a semi-professional league operating under the Puerto Rican Football Federation. It serves as the island’s top division, with men’s and women’s competitions. Below it, a dense network of community clubs and regional leagues forms the developmental base.

Historically, Puerto Rico has hosted fully professional clubs—most notably the Puerto Rico Islanders in the NASL—but stability has always been an issue. Today, Liga Puerto Rico represents the highest consistent tier, while youth academies such as Bayamón FC and Metropolitan FA maintain advanced training environments.

Promotion/relegation is not formalized; Liga Puerto Rico operates as a single-tier system with club licensing requirements rather than promotion from below.

    Major Clubs and Rivalries

Bayamón FC, Metropolitan FA, and Don Bosco FC anchor the modern competitive landscape. Bayamón’s encounters with Metropolitan FA shape the island’s closest thing to a national rivalry.

    Continental Competitions

Puerto Rican clubs qualify for the CFU Caribbean Cup, which can lead into the CONCACAF Champions Cup (formerly Champions League). Metropolitan FA and Bayamón have both appeared in continental qualifiers in recent years.
