Soccer in Illinois

Football in Illinois - culture, history, and development.

Soccer in Illinois is one of the deeper state-level ecosystems in the United States. The state has an MLS club, a major city with long soccer history, strong youth soccer, college programs, adult amateur leagues, and lower-division clubs across Chicago, the suburbs, and downstate communities. Unlike states where soccer is mostly youth-based, Illinois has a full ladder of activity from professional soccer to neighborhood and community competition.

Chicago is the center of the state’s soccer identity, but Illinois soccer is not limited to Chicago. Peoria, suburban Cook County, DuPage County, Metro East communities, college towns, and immigrant-heavy local soccer scenes all contribute to the state’s depth.

Chicago Fire and the Professional Game

The top professional club in Illinois is Chicago Fire FC of Major League Soccer. The Fire are the state’s main national soccer brand and remain the club most closely associated with elite men’s soccer in Illinois. The club has also announced plans for a privately funded soccer-specific stadium and entertainment district at Roosevelt and the river, with an expected opening in spring 2028.

The Fire also connect to the development side of the professional game through Chicago Fire FC II in MLS NEXT Pro. MLS NEXT Pro lists Chicago Fire FC among its clubs, giving the organization a reserve and player-development platform beneath the first team.

    Lower-Division and Pre-Professional Soccer

Illinois has meaningful soccer depth below MLS. Peoria City competes in USL League Two, and the club describes itself as Peoria’s USL League Two team. Peoria City notes that it began play in 2022, has ranked among League Two attendance leaders, made multiple playoff appearances, and reached the 2024 national runner-up position after winning the Central Conference.

Chicago City SC has also appeared in the USL League Two structure, while Chicago House AC represents another part of the local club landscape. Chicago House describes its vision around building a Chicagoland sporting organization, and the club’s history page connects Chicago soccer to older neighborhood-club traditions.

    Youth Soccer and Statewide Development

Youth soccer is one of Illinois’ strongest layers. Illinois Youth Soccer runs several major competitions, including the Illinois State Cup, Presidents Cup, Illinois Cup, Junior Cup, and State Premiership. The Illinois State Cup is described as the official state championship tournament tied to the US Youth Soccer National Championship Series, while the Illinois Cup gives travel and high-level recreational teams another statewide championship option.

Local Leagues, Cups, and Soccer Culture

Illinois soccer works because it has both elite and local layers. Chicago Fire gives the state an MLS anchor. USL League Two and semi-professional clubs provide platforms for college-age and developing players. Youth clubs and state cups create competitive pathways for younger players. Local adult leagues and community clubs keep the sport active across neighborhoods and suburbs.

That combination makes Illinois one of the stronger state soccer ecosystems in the country: professional at the top, competitive in the middle, and broad at the grassroots level.
