Football 101: How Leagues, Cups, and International Play Work

Domestic Leagues: The Weekly Backbone of the Sport

Most countries have a top division where clubs play home and away over a long season. Leagues use a points system—three for a win, one for a draw. There are no playoffs in most countries; the team with the most points wins the title. Below the top division are lower leagues, and clubs move between divisions through promotion and relegation.

    Cup Competitions and Knockout Football

Leagues run alongside domestic cups, which use knockout formats. A lower-division team can upset a giant, giving cups their unpredictable charm. Some countries run multiple cups, and many clubs play in continental tournaments like the Champions League, Copa Libertadores, or CAF Champions League.

    International Football and Global Tournaments

National teams compete in regional championships and World Cup qualifiers. The World Cup is the pinnacle—held every four years, featuring teams from across the world. Players switch between club and national duties throughout the year, creating a constant rhythm of domestic and international storylines.
