Ho Chi Minh City’s football identity has often been more unstable than the city’s size might suggest. Ho Chi Minh City FC has been the most visible modern representative, playing at Thống Nhất Stadium in District 10, a stadium widely associated with football in the city. Saigon FC also became part of the local football map after relocating from Hanoi’s system and playing in Ho Chi Minh City, but the club dissolved in 2023 after relegation and ownership problems.
That instability is important to the city’s story. Ho Chi Minh City has the population, commercial base, and football audience to support a stronger professional scene, but Vietnamese club football has often been affected by financing issues, ownership changes, and shifting licenses. Ho Chi Minh City clubs fit into the national system rather than a city-based pyramid. A club in V.League 1 competes for national standing, AFC opportunities, and survival in the top division. Clubs in V.League 2 or the Second Division are closer to the development and promotion pathway, where stability and licensing matter as much as results.
Promotion and relegation give the system movement, but Ho Chi Minh City’s recent football history shows that falling down the pyramid can be dangerous when club finances are weak. Saigon FC’s collapse after relegation is the clearest example of how fragile the pathway can be for clubs without a stable foundation.

Thống Nhất Stadium remains central to football in Ho Chi Minh City. It gives the city’s clubs a recognizable home and connects the professional game to a historic urban venue. Around that professional layer, football also grows through schools, academies, community pitches, futsal courts, and private training programs.
The city’s future depends on turning that broad participation base into a stronger club ecosystem. Ho Chi Minh City has the conditions for a deeper football market: a large population, strong commercial activity, and high interest in the sport. The challenge is building durable clubs, not simply having teams appear and disappear. In that sense, football in Ho Chi Minh City is best understood as a major urban market still searching for the stable professional structure its size should eventually support.
