2004: Athens, Greece

    Returning to the birthplace of the Games, Athens delivered a football tournament defined by one dominant story: Argentina’s march to men’s gold with one of the most complete Olympic squads ever assembled.

    Tournament Format

    The men’s competition featured 16 U23 teams with up to three overage players. The women’s tournament expanded to 10 teams, featuring senior national squads and a group-to-knockout structure.

    Argentina, led by Carlos Tevez, Javier Mascherano, Andrés D’Alessandro, and Roberto Ayala, did not concede a single goal the entire tournament. They defeated Italy, Paraguay, and Brazil en route to a flawless gold-medal campaign. On the women’s side, the United States and Brazil delivered the final’s most dramatic storyline. The U.S. won 2–1 in extra time, with Abby Wambach scoring the decisive goal.
